The 20·20·20 rule, made effortless

Rest your eyes before they ache.

A gentle companion for long screen days that helps hold off digital eye strain. Every 20 minutes it nudges you to look 20 feet away for 20 seconds - a soft chime, a guided countdown, and the good sense to pause itself during games, video and calls.

Why it works

Pull your focus from near to far

Hours locked at one short distance - blinking far less than usual - are what drive digital eye strain, sometimes called computer vision syndrome: dry, tired, aching eyes and focus that won't snap sharp. The 20·20·20 rule gives them a regular, restful reset - and 20-20-20 Vision makes remembering it automatic through every long workday. Treat each break as a small moment of mindfulness: a few seconds to unclench your eyes, breathe, and come back to the screen a little clearer.

your screen ~20 feet away 20 seconds, every 20 minutes
20

minutes between breaks

A steady reminder you can dial anywhere from 15 to 60 minutes.

20

feet to look away

Out a window, down a corridor, across the room - let your focus relax into the distance.

20

seconds to rest

A guided countdown keeps the break honest and reminds you to blink. Snooze it whenever you're mid-thought.

Interval, rest length & snooze are all adjustable.

A look around

Small on your desktop, clear at a glance

Everything lives in one tidy panel - the countdown, the nudge, the break, your settings, and a setup wizard that has you sorted in under a minute. Prefer it out of the way? Run it minimised to the tray and rely on the audio cue, the popup visual notification, or both - whichever works best for you.

Advanced

The clever bits, explained

20-20-20 Vision does a few things a simple timer can't - it reads what else is happening on your PC and stays out of the way at exactly the right moments. Here's how each one works.

Built into the 20-20-20 Vision app for Windows
Auto-pause and app-pausing controls in settings

Auto-pause - it knows when not to interrupt Pro

You shouldn't get a "rest your eyes" nudge in the middle of a presentation or a boss fight. When Auto-pause is on, 20-20-20 Vision watches the same status that Windows itself uses to decide whether to show its own notifications - so it pauses in exactly the moments Windows would stay quiet.

That covers fullscreen games, fullscreen video, presentation mode, and Windows Focus Assist / Do Not Disturb. For video calls there's a dedicated Pause during video calls switch that watches whether your webcam is in use - so it reliably catches Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Meet and any other call app, on every machine. The moment you're back to normal, the countdown picks up where it left off.

Pause for specific apps Pro

If an app doesn't trigger the system signal above - a meeting tool you keep in a window, a recording app, anything - you can name it directly. Choose apps… lists what's currently running, you tick the ones you care about, and they appear as little chips.

From then on, 20-20-20 Vision checks every few seconds whether any of those apps are open. While one is, reminders pause; when you close it, they resume. It's the manual companion to auto-pause, for the cases only you know about.

Each app can also be narrowed with three triggers: Focused pauses only while it's the front window, Camera only while it's using your webcam, and Media only while it's playing sound or video - a YouTube tab, a film in a window, a game with the sound up. Pick more than one and choose whether all or any of them must match.

And a few more, in plain terms

Windows notifications

When it's time, 20-20-20 Vision raises a notification with Start rest, Skip and Snooze buttons you can act on without switching windows - handy when it's minimised to the tray. Don't want them? A single switch turns them off and keeps just the in-app prompt.

Auto-start breaks

Switch this on and you don't even click Accept - the chime sounds, the prompt appears for a beat, and the 20-second break begins on its own. Catch it mid-thought and Snooze still steps in.

Always running, never in the way

The app lives in your system tray. Closing the window doesn't quit it - it tucks away and the timer keeps counting, so reminders arrive whether or not a window is open. Quit properly any time from the tray menu.

Start with Windows

Have 20-20-20 Vision launch quietly to the tray when you sign in, so your eye breaks are looking after themselves from the first minute of the day.

Pick your speaker Pro

In the desktop app you can send reminders to a specific output device - useful if your everyday audio goes one place and you'd like the gentle chime somewhere else.

"But I could just set a timer every 20 minutes…"
Well - yeah, you could 😂 but what 20-20-20 Vision does differently is notice when you actually need the break. Stepped away from your desk? Watching something? In a meeting? Mid-game? Your eyes are already moving and refocusing - not locked in an unrelenting squint at text. So it gets out of the way when it should, and only nudges you when a break will genuinely help.

It's a simple idea, elegantly done and easily tuned to exactly how you work. Give it a try - it's free, and the advanced features are a small one-time fee away from a lifetime licence.

The backstory

A developer's cautionary tale

I'd get so locked into the latest project that I'd look up four hours later with eyes that felt like they were bleeding.

That dry, gritty, can't-quite-refocus feeling at the end of a screen marathon - I know it intimately. I'm a developer; I'd zone into a problem and forget my eyes existed until they were sore, dry and strained. 20-20-20 Vision began as a fix for exactly that: a calm nudge to look away before the ache sets in, so a day at the keyboard doesn't end with that raw, over-worked feeling.

It's built to head off the everyday digital eye strain that quietly stacks up across a long day - the dry eyes, the screen fatigue, the focus that's slow to snap back to the distance.

"But my eyes are fine - I don't need this."
So were mine. Then, after years of staring at a desktop, I needed glasses. Then a stronger prescription. Then stronger again - and repeat. When I finally asked my optometrist what I could do to slow it down, they pointed me to the 20·20·20 rule. So I built 20-20-20 Vision to look after my own eyes - and everyone else navigating a screen-bound, 21st-century working life. It's the same logic occupational health teams apply to display-screen work: small, regular breaks now to protect your sight later. Your future self (and your optician's bill) will thank you.
FAQ

Good questions

Is it really free?
The core 20·20·20 reminder is free forever - the timer, sounds, six themes, five languages, scheduling, popup notifications and statistics are all included, with no sign-up. Pro is an optional one-time $15 that adds smart auto-pausing, idle detection, keyboard shortcuts, speaker choice and settings backup. Pro starts with a free trial.
What's the difference between Free and Pro?
Free covers everything you need to take your breaks. Pro adds the features that keep a break from landing at the wrong moment - auto-pause for fullscreen games, video and calls, app-specific pausing, idle-aware pausing, global keyboard shortcuts, choosing your output speaker, and settings backup. See the full comparison. It's a one-time purchase, not a subscription.
Does it collect any data?
Almost none. There are no accounts, and your settings, custom sounds and rest statistics stay on your device - they're never sent anywhere. If you buy Pro, the app checks your license key against our licensing server, which has no database of its own - it just relays the check to our payment processor. This website also uses Google Analytics to see general traffic. See the privacy policy for the specifics.
Does it watch or use my webcam?
No - it never opens, records or sees your camera. To pause during video calls, 20-20-20 Vision only reads the same indicator Windows shows in your tray: which app currently has the camera on. Your camera feed is never accessed, and nothing about it leaves your PC.
Why does it need to see my running programs?
Only so smart pausing works - to spot a fullscreen game, a video, or an app you've chosen to pause for. The list of running apps is read locally every few seconds and never leaves your PC. No accounts, no tracking.
Does it work offline?
Yes. 20-20-20 Vision runs entirely on your device with no internet connection needed. Buying Pro happens in your browser; once unlocked, it stays unlocked offline.
Do I have to set it up?
No. The first time you open 20-20-20 Vision, a quick setup wizard walks you through it - pick one of four ready-made styles and you're done in under a minute. Everything stays adjustable afterwards.
What are the setup styles?
Minimal - a gentle chime, nothing on screen. Gentle - a soft chime with a calm corner popup (recommended for most people). Advanced - full control with a countdown popup and keyboard shortcuts. Strong - louder sound, a bold visual and larger high-contrast text for a cue that's hard to miss. You can run setup again any time from Settings.
Is there a instruction guide to the app?
Yes - Although we have tried to make things as easy to use as possible, the interactive instruction guide is a live, clickable tour of the main window that explains what every part does: the countdown ring, the rhythm strip, the always-on-top pin, the status pills and the settings cog. It covers the everyday basics - everything else you can fine-tune lives behind the settings cog.
Does it run in the background?
Yes. 20-20-20 Vision lives in your system tray - close the window and it keeps running, so reminders arrive whether or not a window is open. You can rely on the audio cue, the popup notification, or both, and quit properly from the tray menu when you want to.
Will it interrupt my games or a video?
Not if Auto-pause (a Pro feature) is on. 20-20-20 Vision reads the same status Windows uses for its own notifications, so it goes quiet during fullscreen games, fullscreen video and presentations, then resumes automatically afterwards. On Free, you can instead use Active hours and a quiet period to avoid known busy times.
Does auto-pause work for Teams / Zoom calls?
Usually, yes (with Pro). Most calls put Windows into presentation or do-not-disturb mode - especially while sharing your screen - which 20-20-20 Vision treats as a signal to pause. For meeting apps that don't, add them by name under Pause when these apps run, and breaks pause whenever they're open.
Can breaks start on their own?
Yes, and it's free - turn on Auto-start breaks in Settings. The chime sounds, the prompt shows for a moment, then the 20-second rest begins automatically without a click. Snooze still works if you catch it in time.
Can I change the 20-minute interval?
Yes. In Settings you can set the reminder interval (15–60 min), the rest length (20–60 s) and the snooze duration. The 20·20·20 defaults are just a sensible start.
I can't see the tray icon - how do I keep it visible?
Windows often tucks new icons into the hidden-icons pop-up (the ^ arrow by the clock). On Windows 11 you can drag the 20-20-20 Vision eye from there onto the taskbar to pin it, or turn it on under Settings → Personalisation → Taskbar → Other system tray icons. On Windows 10 it's Taskbar settings → Select which icons appear on the taskbar. Step-by-step is in Show the tray icon.
A game or app keeps pausing reminders when it shouldn't
Some apps report themselves as "fullscreen" even when they're just a background helper. If auto-pause triggers on the wrong one, add it to the ignore list in Settings and 20-20-20 Vision will stop treating it as fullscreen.
Will it bother me after work?
Only if you let it. Turn on Active hours to limit reminders to set times and days, and add a quiet period - like your lunch break - within them.
Is there a larger-text or high-contrast option?
Yes. Turn on Larger text in Settings for bigger, higher-contrast text throughout the app - and it's the default in the Strong setup style. Fitting, for an app about looking after your eyes.
Can I use my own reminder sound?
Yes - Settings → Sounds → Load a custom sound, then pick any audio file (under about 2.5 MB) as your start or end tone. It's stored locally. Free.
Can I choose which speaker it uses?
Yes, with Pro - pick the output device for reminders in Settings, handy if your everyday audio goes one place and you'd like the chime somewhere else.
What languages does it support?
English, German, Japanese, French and Spanish - and it can follow your Windows language automatically, or you can pick one under Settings → Appearance → Language. Included free.
I've got a new PC - can I move my Pro licence?
Yes. Deactivate on the old machine (Settings → Pro), then paste your key on the new one to activate. Your one-time purchase moves with you.
Does this actually help my eyes? Is it medical advice?
The 20·20·20 rule is a simple habit widely suggested by optometrists to ease the symptoms of digital eye strain - dry, tired eyes and slow-to-refocus vision - on long screen days. 20-20-20 Vision is a wellbeing aid that helps you keep the habit, not a medical device, and it isn't a substitute for professional eye care. If you have persistent or worsening symptoms, please see an optometrist.
Is there a Mac or Linux version?
Not yet - 20-20-20 Vision is a Windows 10 & 11 app for now.
Can I license it for my team or workplace?
Yes - for occupational-health rollouts, volume Pro licences or bespoke arrangements, 20-20-20 Vision for Workplaces or get in touch at business licensing below.
